Kerrville, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University battled tough conditions in Kerville against Schreiner University splitting the double header. ETBU won the first game 8-4 and dropped the second game 8-7 due to darkness. ETBU is now 2-1 on the young season, and Schreiner is 1-2.
Kameron Sumrall started off the scoring for ETBU with a two-run single in the top of the first inning. Schreiner used a sacrifice fly to bring the score back within one run. Landen Barns knocked in Sumrall with a sacrifice fly to give ETBU a 3-1 advantage. Jimmy Kizer and Brice Winter used back-to-back doubles to give ETBU a 5-1 lead.
ETBU would score their next three runs on a wild pitch, and two off an error to give the Tigers a comfortable 8-1 lead. Schreiner would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Sumrall would close the door on the mound to cap off a successful game one.
Ashley Dukes starts his senior year off with his first victory on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings, scattering three hits, and allowing just one run on the day. Kizer led the way at the plate with two hits for ETBU and Sumrall had two RBIs to lead ETBU. Zach Gartner led ETBU with two runs on the day. ETBU had seven hits in the game as a team.
Caleb Allen was given the loss for Schreiner, pitching 5.1 innings. Allen gave up seven hits and six runs (two earned) on the day. Osman Quintana had three RBIs in the loss.
Schreiner got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs, two on an RBI single and one on a throwing error. Garrett Lakey knocked in Kizer with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, followed by a pinch hit single from Mason Aldredge to score a run. ETBU tied the game up at three runs on an RBI fielder’s choice from Jaxon Rader.
Josh Warbington broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to give ETBU a 4-3 lead. Schreiner regained the lead in the bottom half of the third inning, on a wild pitch and an error, making the score in favor of Schreiner 5-4. Zach Compton used a sacrifice fly to even the score in the top of the fourth inning. Lakey hit a two-run single to extend the lead for ETBU to 7-5.
Schreiner retook the lead over Schreiner in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two ETBU pitchers. ETBU would tie the game up in the top of the seventh inning of the game, making the score 8-8. The umpires called the game due to darkness, muggy weather, and no lights at the field. Since the inning was not complete, the top of the inning did not count, making the score in favor of Schreiner 8-7, giving the Mountaineers the win.
Derrick Findley was tagged with the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and allowin geight runs (seven earned). Cody Pierce pitched 0.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit. Kizer had another good game at the plate, going 3-3. Barns and Gartner had two each each. Lakey finished the second game with three of the seven RBIs.
ETBU will return to action with their home opener against Centenary College. ETBU will play a single game on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. ETBU and Centenary will resume on Saturday with a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
