MARSHALL, Texas – In an offensive outburst, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team pounced on Southwestern University, cruising to a 14-2 win to begin their three-game series. ETBU used a six-run first inning to catapult the Tigers out in front. Southwestern falls to 4-8 overall, while ETBU improves to 9-4.

Landen Barns got the Tigers on the board in the first inning with a runs scoring triple. Zach Gartner hit his fifth homerun of the year, a three-run homerun to give ETBU a 4-0 lead. Josh Warbington sent a moon shot over the scoreboard to extend the lead to 6-0 after one inning. Southwestern got their only two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles. Conner Combs doubled home Dylan Sumpter in the bottom of the second inning to extend ETBU’s lead to 7-2. ETBU tacked on three runs in the sixth inning, and four runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Zach Pollard picked up his first win of the season, allowing only two runs in six innings of work. Garrett Penny pitched three innings of scoreless relief for ETBU. ETBU racked up 15 hits as a team, led by Barns and Combs with three hits each. Zach Compton, Brice Winter, and Warbington each had two hits in the contest. Gartner had four RBIs in the game, Combs had three, and Warbington and Barns had two each.

Ben Little and Ethan Hallmark each had two hits for Southwestern, followed by Byron Dowdell and Ethan Widoff with one hit apiece. Hallmark had both RBIs for the Pirates. Jeremy Rice was tagged with loss, allowing seven runs on six hits in two innings.

ETBU will resume play against Southwestern with a double header starting at 1:00 p.m. at Woods Field.
