MARSHALL, Texas – It was a back-and-forth day for both games, as the East Texas Baptist University baseball team dropped two tightly contested games to Southwestern University. ETBU fell in game one 11-7, and lost game two in heartbreaking fashion 9-8.

GAME 1

ETBU jumped on the board thanks in part to a Dylan Sumpter leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Southwestern responded with a five-run second inning, using four hits and one ETBU error to grab the lead. ETBU would get one-run back in the bottom of the second on a Casey Combs RBI single. Southwestern answered with a run of their own on an RBI single in the top of the third. Zach Compton hit a triple off the centerfield wall to score Sumpter in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 6-3. Southwestern got three runs in the top of the fifth inning, and two runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 11-3. ETBU had a feverish comeback attempt in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homerun from Landen Barns and an RBI single from Combs, but fell up short.

Combs had three hits in four at bats to lead ETBU, and Barns and Sumpter each had two hits. Compton, Conner Combs, and Zach Gartner each had one hit in the loss. Landen Barns had a team-high three RBIs. Derrick Findley was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 1.0+ inning of work. Kyle Loson and Zackery Pierce pitched the remaining 6.0 innings in relief.

Jacob Kendra earned the win in relief for Southwestern, pitching 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings, striking out three batters. Ben Little and Bryon Dowdell each had three hits in the game, and Dowdell and Ethan Hallmark each had one homerun in the game. Dowdell and Cameron Cooper finished with three runs batted in each.

GAME 2

ETBU again struck in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on a deep sacrifice fly that plated Compton and Barns, giving ETBU a 2-0 lead. Southwestern answered with two runs on a groundout and single to tie the game up. Southwestern scored four more runs in the top of the third off a double, two-run homerun, and single to extend the Pirate lead to 6-2. ETBU got three runs back in the bottom of the inning to spark a comeback. ETBU would get that comeback thanks to a single from Gartner in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at six runs apiece.

Southwestern regained the lead 7-6, but ETBU tied it back up at 7-7 on a RBI groundout from Gartner. Compton would give ETBU the lead with an RBI single of his own, making the score 8-7. Little drove home the tying run, and Southwestern took the lead for good on a passed ball scoring Hallmark.

Compton led ETBU with two of the eight hits in the game. Sumpter, Barns, Conner Combs, Gartner, Warbington, and Brice Winter each tallied one hit. Gartner and Combs had three and two RBIs respectively. Kam Sumrall was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in relief.

Dowdell, Hallmark, Little, Colby Schmidt, and Samuel Cox each had two hits. Little led the way with three RBIs, after hitting a two-run homerun. Hayden Holley picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-0.
