MEMPHIS, Tennessee – It was a tournament championship game for the ages as the East Texas Baptist University men’s basketball team triumphed over Rhodes College in overtime, 119-116. It was a career day for Jordan Quillian as he finished with 39 points and 16 rebounds in the win.

ETBU controlled much of the first half of the game as they were up by as many as 23 points. ETBU finished the first half with a 56-43 lead over Rhodes. In the second half, Rhodes forced overtime to decide the champion as they outscored ETBU 61-48 in the second frame. ETBU rose to the challenge of the home crowd, and knocked down key free throws late to pull away with the win to improve their record to 3-0 on the young season.

After Quillian’s 39 points, Dylan Augustine scored 21 points and increased his current streak of consecutive games with a three point field goal to 30 games. Jordan Gosey and Robby Dooley finished with 13 points and 11 points respectively to round out the top scorers for ETBU. Gosey records his second double-double of the season, and Quillian earns his first of the season. Landin Brown led the way passing with eight assists, followed by Dooley with seven, and Augustine with six. Quillian led the way with 16 rebounds and Gosey added 13 rebounds.

ETBU was 44-76 from the field in the game for a 57.9 field goal percentage. ETBU hit eight three pointers as a team to finish 8-21 and 38.1% from behind the arc. ETBU made a season high 23 free throws, and fished 23-34 from the free throw line. ETBU is now averaging 107 points per game through their first three games of the season, and allowing 87.3 points per game.

Rhodes had six players that scored in double figures led by Daniel Darst with 17 points. Ian Harrison recorded a double double by having 10 points and 10 rebounds. J. J. Weir had 10 assists to lead the Lynx. Rhodes shot 40.7% from the field, and only 28.1% from behind the arc. Rhodes falls to 1-1 on the season.

ETBU returns to Ornelas Gymnasium for a nonconference match against Concordia University (Texas) at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday November 23rd. ETBU will start conference play against Hardin-Simmons University on December 1st in Abilene, Texas.
