BELTON, Texas – It was a back and forth battle on Wednesday night in Belton as the East Texas Baptist University men’s basketball team fell to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 75-69. ETBU put up a fight in the final minute, making several big shots, but could not complete the comeback.

UMHB jumped out to a 7-2 lead, and would not give up that lead for the remainder of the game. Several times throughout the first half, ETBU would bring the score within one point, but UMHB would knock down a jump shot or three pointer to extend the lead. UMHB held a 30-27 advantage at the break.

UMHB opened up the second half with a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 43-27. Tyler Day would erupt for 13 of the next 15 ETBU points to bring the score to 49-42. ETBU would bring the score within five points, but would not pull closer until later in the game. ETBU was down 70-60, before the knocked down three, three point field goals in the final minute to make the game interesting. UMHB used good ball movement and free throws to ice the game, and the win.

“After the game in the locker room, I walked in to find our guys owning the loss and taking responsibility for each other. It really spoke volumes to their maturity. I was really proud of them to see that, even though the score wasn’t in our favor,” said head coach Brandon Curran after the game.

UMHB was led by Braden Hammond who scored 22 points, and added five rebounds and five assists. Austen Stolte recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and also had five blocks. Demarius Cress, Aubrie King, and Daniel Mills each scored in double figures. UMHB shot 43.3% in the game, and 40% from behind the arc.

Tyler Day led ETBU with 15 points on 5-8 shooting. Jordan Gosey added 14 points and six rebounds. Jordan Quillian led ETBU with nine rebounds. Jordan Gray pitched in 12 points, all on made three point field goals. ETBU led the game with eight steals, and forced 15 UMHB turnovers.

ETBU will return to action this Saturday at Ornelas Gymnasium with a home game against Belhaven University. Belhaven is in their second year of transition to an NCAA division III school, so this will not count as an American Southwest Conference game.
