MARSHALL, Texas – After a big first half and an 18-point lead, the East Texas Baptist University men’s basketball team held off a valiant comeback attempt from the University of Texas at Tyler for a 76-66 victory over in the American Southwest Conference East Division. ETBU improves to 13-7 overall and 5-7 in American Southwest Conference action while UT Tyler falls to 14-7 overall and 8-5 in ASC play.
UT Tyler jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before ETBU used a 9-2 lead to grab the lead. UT Tyler would then go on an 11-2 run of their own to retake the lead. ETBU would come back and tie the game at 25 before taking the lead for good in the rest of the contest on a 13-0 run. ETBU closed out the first half with hot shooting from the floor for a 46-32 lead at the half.
ETBU jumped out to an early 18 point lead over UT Tyler in the beginning of the second half. UT Tyler would not go quietly, as the Patriots brought the score within four points with 5:05 left in the game. This was as close as they would get as ETBU would ice the game with clutch shots down the stretch.
ETBU was led by Jordan Quillian with 18 points on 9-of-9 shooting in the game. Jordan Gray knocked down four three pointers en route to 14 points. Will Thomas finished with 13 points, and Robby Dooley added 11 points of his own. Quillian, Thomas, and Landin Brown each had six rebounds for ETBU. Brown had a game-high seven assists.
ETBU racked up 23 assists as a team, and shot 61.5% from the floor. ETBU shot 50.0% from behind the arc on 5-10 attempts. ETBU outrebounded UT Tyler 35-27 in the contest.
UT Tyler was led by Tyler Jacobs and Skyler Hadden with 11 points each. Verlo Levels had 10 points for the Patriots. Melvin Anthony had a game-high seven rebounds. UT Tyler shot 40% from the floor, 33.3% from behind the arc, and 92.3% from the free throw line.
ETBU will return to action on Saturday as they host the #1 seed in the East Division, LeTourneau University at 3:00 p.m
