LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With a powerful bat in the American Southwest Conference tournament, freshman Jayme Perez (Austin, Texas) has been named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hitter of the Week. This is the second time this year that East Texas Baptist University has been honored with a national player of the week as Shelby Parker was the pitcher earlier in the season.
Perez was the leadoff batter for ETBU in all their games and in five of the six games she hit a home run. Two of the home runs came in her first at-bats with her very first one on the second pitch of the game. Her second home run vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor was the fourth pitch to her. She hit a home run in four straight games with two home runs going off the scoreboard in left field. She also hit a home run over every fence in leftfield, rightfield, and centerfield.
Finishing the week batting .280, she had seven total hits and seven RBI. ETBU finished as the conference runner-up and received an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament with a 39-7 record. They are currently ranked sixth in the NFCA poll. They will face #3 Texas-Tyler and Texas Lutheran on Friday in the NCAA Tournament in Tyler.
