ETBU Leads ASC in Awards with 9 Selections

RICHARDSON, Texas – Leading the American Southwest Conference in the most players awarded all-conference, East Texas Baptist University had nine athletes being named to a team.  ETBU had one player of the year and two players on the first team.

Mallory Sanders was voted the ASC’s “Freshman of the Year” for her play as the top freshman.  She led the freshmen in the ASC in kills per game at 3.10 (4th overall in ASC) and 180 kills.  She also ranked fifth in hitting percentage (.296) and was seventh in service aces (0.34).  This is the second year in a row that ETBU has produced the freshman of the year as Kolby Sharp earned the award last year.

Kolby Sharp and Adaeze Elonu were named to the first team.  Sharp, who was the preseason defensive player of the year, is on the first-team for the second year in a row.   She leads the ASC in hitting percentage (.391) and has 301 kills overall.  This  year she has also produced 180 kills in conference play and 81 digs.

Elonu gains her first all-conference award on the first team.  In the ASC she is second in blocks (1.06 pg) with 134 and is third in hitting percentage (.322).  She has 242 kills, 30 digs, and leads the team in blocking.  Last year she was named to the ASC All-Tournament team.

Sanders was voted onto the second team after being named the freshman of the year.  In 105 sets played, she has 276 kills which is second on the team, 45 serving aces, 243 digs, and 48 blocks.  In the ASC she is third in service aces (0.43) and ninth in hitting percentage (.268) and kills (2.63). 

Both Hannah Jones and Kayla Taylor made the third team.  Both players were named All-ASC last year.  Jones is eighth in the ASC in digs at 4.35 per game.  She has produced 531 digs and 31 service aces.  She has also earned the ASC Player of the Week award once this year.  Taylor was an All-ASC second team selection last year and leads the team in assists with 697.  She is seventh in the ASC in assists at 5.53 per game.

Melanie Moyer, Nicole Buzzard, Kassie Freitag, and Madelynn Kinsel were all named to the honorable mention team.  Moyer is now a two-time honorable mention selection as she made the team in 2012.  She has 228 kills, 247 digs, and 27 blocks.  Buzzard and Kinsel both gain their first award as freshman.  Buzzard recorded 553 assists and 214 digs while Kinsel had 164 kills and 67 blocks.  Freitag now has two all-conference awards as she was first-team in 2012.  She has recorded 270 kills, 16 serving aces, 140 digs, and 40 blocks

ETBU will continue their season on Thursday in the ASC Tournament vs. Concordia-Texas in Richardson, Texas, at Texas-Dallas.
