MARSHALL, Texas – Continuing their tradition of excellence, the East Texas Baptist University women’s soccer team will be making their third straight appearance, and fourth in the last five years, in the American Southwest Conference tournament. This will be ETBU’s eighth trip overall, playing in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012.
In their most recent contest, a 2-1 victory in overtime over Texas-Tyler, Christina Salas had a career high 17 saves, and a Paola Bear golden goal in the 99th minute gave them the victory and the number five seed in the ASC tournament. It was also the first victory by ETBU over UT-Tyler since 2005.
“This win was probably better than most,” said head coach Paul Grant. “To be able to knock off the fifth ranked team in the region at their place, I don’t think it could end in a better way. I think this win will carry over to the conference tournament.”
On the season, Bear, Christina Robles and Natalie Torres all scored four goals this season to lead the team in scoring and Salas played the most minutes in goal, making 68 saves and posting a 1.49 GAA
ETBU was defeated in the quarterfinal round 2-0 by Mississippi College in last year’s tournament. Their opponent in their quarterfinal playoff game on Thursday at 11 a. m., will be none other than the Texas-Tyler team they just faced. Texas-Tyler’s record this season was 11-5 overall and 6-4 in the ASC. This will be the first meeting between these two teams in the playoffs.
Chestley Strother was the leading goal scorer for Texas-Tyler this season with seven and Macy Hurley started all 16 games in goal, making 55 saves and posting a 0.77 GAA.
When asked about what the playoff appearance means for the program, Grant replied: “I think we have set something that is expected. Getting in the tournament is nice, but winning a game is even nicer. Confidence is high, the ladies feel good about things and you go out and get a win on Thursday and take it from there.”
The winner of the ETBU-Tyler game will face top-seeded and 10-time defending tournament champion Hardin-Simmons on Friday at 11 a. m. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday.
TICKETS: Tickets for the ASC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament are $7 for adults, $5 for college students and $3 for students ages 6-18. Official tournament long-sleeved t-shirts are $15
